A map of London with text across "Premier League Away Days: Which Clubs Travel the Furthest in 2025/26?"

The geographical location of an English Premier League football club determines how far they have to travel to away games. In this article, we take a deep dive into how far clubs have to travel in a Premier League season and which clubs might be at an advantage or disadvantage on away days.

Methodology: How Distances Were Calculated

Before we get much further, we should provide some information and assumptions around the data being used in this article.

When measuring the distance traveled between two football clubs, the stadium was used as each respective club’s location. And where possible, the center of a club’s pitch was used as the reference point.

Additionally, the measurements presented in this article are based on a straight-line between stadiums calculated in miles.

The data doesn’t account for the route you might take to travel to a stadium (e.g., train, driving, flying, etc.). The data just provides the shortest distance between the two points, i.e. a straight line.

Finally, the distance traveled doesn’t include a return trip. So technically, these distances could be doubled. However, for the sake of this article, we are just talking about a one-way distance.

Total Distance Travelled in the 2025/26 Premier League Season

In total, we calculated that English Premier League clubs will travel about 45,356 miles in the 2025-2026 season to away games. On average, that means each club should travel about 2,268 miles.

However, as you can see in the below graph (and explained later on in the article), some clubs are definite outliers that are traveling a lot more or a lot less than the calculated average.

Premier League Clubs With the Longest Travel Distances

Newcastle United will travel 3,428.1 miles to away games in the 25-26 Premier League season, which is the furthest distance amongst all clubs. The club’s stadium, St James’ Park is up in the far north east of England where not many other Premier League clubs are located.

With Sunderland now back in the Premier League, Newcastle’s away game against them makes for their shortest journey of the seasons at just 10.19 miles.

Newcastle’s longest journey is when they play Bournemouth on the south side of the country.  To put it in perspective, Newcastle will travel 293.1 miles for that away game.

The top 5 clubs with the longest away travel in the 2025-2026 English Premier League season can be seen below. In addition to Newcastle, we have Sunderland, Bournemouth, Brighton and Liverpool.

While Newcastle travels the furthest, they’re followed closely by Sunderland who only travel about 71.4 miles less over the course of the season. The difference in total distance traveled between the top 5 clubs provides some insights into just how far north Newcastle and Sunderland are.

For instance, Liverpool will travel the fifth furthest distance to away games in the Premier League this year, and they will still travel over 1,101 miles less than Newcastle or 1,030 miles less than Sunderland.

Premier League Clubs With the Shortest Travel Distances

At the other end of the spectrum is Aston Villa, who will travel the shortest distance to away games in the 2025-2026 Premier League season. In total, they will travel 1,835.9 miles.

To put that in perspective, Newcastle will travel 1.87 times more than Villa this season or over 1,592 miles further.

Aston Villa are centrally located in England in the city of Birmingham. Their central location allows for relatively short journeys for away games, when compared to other clubs in the Premier League.

Villa’s longest journey is 170.75 miles when they make the trip up north to play Newcastle at St James’ Park. Aston Villa’s longest trip is about 10-miles shorter than Newcastle’s average away trip and about 123-miles shorter than Newcastle’s longest trip.

On average, Villa travel 96.6 miles to away matches, while their shortest travel is to Molineux Stadium when they play Wolves, which is only 11.74 miles away when heading north west.

In addition to Aston Villa, the bottom 5 clubs in terms of minimum distance traveled for away games in the 2025-2026 Premier League season include Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Brentford and Arsenal.

As seen in the graph below, all five clubs are well below the league average of 2,267.8 miles traveled. Additionally, the range between Aston Villa and Arsenal (least and 5th least distance traveled for away games) is only 164.6 miles.

Why Premier League Away Day Travel Distances Might Matter?

While this data is interesting, the question you might be asking yourself is so what? So what if clubs have to travel longer or shorter distances to away matches?

Further distances traveled for specific clubs likely means longer travel time to away matches. More opportunities for delays. More time that players spend away from their family or their homes, where it might be easier to relax and recoup.

Additionally, further distances to travel for away matches might mean less fans making the trip. This results in less away fans in the stadium to cheer on their team.

While we’re still early on in the 2025-2026 English Premier League season, the intent is to correlate these distances with results when more data is available.

Do the distances traveled for away matches have any impact on results? It’s a question we look forward to diving into later on in the season when more matches have been played.

Final Thoughts

Well, that’s it for this article. In this post, we took a step back from pure football statistics and took a different approach. The focus was on the distances that clubs travel for away matches.

Clubs like Newcastle and Sunderland in the North East of England are making quit the journey every time they play away. Other clubs like Aston Villa are centrally located in Birmingham and have relatively short distances to travel for away games, in comparison.

As the Premier League season progresses and more matches have been played, the intent is to see if the distances traveled for away matches has any impact on results.

What were your thoughts on the distances that clubs travel for away matches? Are there any clubs that stand out to you? Any predictions for how these distances might impact results?
