Antoine Semenyo left Bournemouth in January having scored 10 of their first 34 Premier League goals.
That was 29% of the team’s total.
He was also more than a scorer. His pace, power, carrying and finishing made him one of the main outlets in Andoni Iraola’s transition-heavy attack, while his long throws created another route towards goal. Premier League
The obvious question was who would replace him.
Bournemouth’s answer turned out to be: nobody.
Junior Kroupi became the No 10. Marcus Tavernier shifted towards the left. Adrien Truffert supplied width outside him. January signing Rayan provided the speed and carrying threat from a different starting position. Premier League
Then something even more interesting happened.
Bournemouth stopped losing.
Their final 18 Premier League matches formed the longest unbeaten run in the division that season, beginning with Semenyo’s farewell appearance against Tottenham and continuing through the final day. Premier League AFC Bournemouth
But the reason was not what you might expect.
Bournemouth did not suddenly score more goals without their best attacker.
They became dramatically harder to beat.
They did not actually score more without him
Split Bournemouth’s season at Semenyo’s final appearance and the results improve sharply.
Across the first 21 league matches, Bournemouth collected 26 points. Across the following 17, they took 31. That moved their points rate from 1.24 per match to 1.82. The post-Semenyo sequence contained seven wins and ten draws without a defeat. StatMuse StatMuse
If the simple explanation were that Bournemouth replaced Semenyo’s attacking output, we would expect their scoring to rise.
It fell.
They averaged 1.62 goals per match over the first 21 fixtures and 1.41 over the final 17. StatMuse StatMuse
Expected goals improved, but only modestly, from 1.61 xG per match to 1.71. Shot volume was almost unchanged: approximately 13.81 shots per match before the split and 13.88 afterwards. StatMuse StatMuse
The quality of those shots improved slightly. Bournemouth went from roughly 0.117 xG per shot to 0.123. That is movement in the right direction, but nowhere near enough to explain the transformation in results by itself. StatMuse StatMuse

Points went up.
Scoring went down.
The real change was at the other end.
The decisive improvement was defensive
Bournemouth conceded 40 goals in their first 21 league matches.
They conceded only 14 across the next 17.
That is a fall from 1.90 goals conceded per match to 0.82. StatMuse StatMuse
That is the statistic that changes the story.
Bournemouth did not absorb Semenyo’s departure by replacing ten goals with ten goals.
They changed the conditions required to win.
Before the sale, stronger attacking output frequently had to compensate for a defence conceding almost two goals per match. Afterwards, Bournemouth could score less and still collect more points because opponents found it far harder to turn matches into defeats.
By the end of the season, they had finished sixth with 57 points, their highest top-flight position, and qualified for Europe for the first time. AFC Bournemouth
The transfer story was therefore only half the story.
The other half was tactical.
Replacing Semenyo was always the wrong question
Semenyo had condensed several attacking jobs into one player.
He could carry the ball over distance.
He could turn a regain into a fast attack.
He could beat defenders individually.
He could finish.
He could threaten from either flank.
Even his long throws created danger, producing 14 shot-ending sequences from 47 attempts before his departure. Premier League
That profile fitted Iraola’s Bournemouth particularly well.
Their established identity involved aggressive pressing, quick regains and rapid attacks, with Semenyo’s movement and speed giving those transitions a natural end point. Premier League
Bournemouth were part of the Premier League’s wider shift towards more direct football.
So asking another winger to “be Semenyo” would have created an almost impossible recruitment problem.
Instead, Bournemouth divided the functions rather than replacing names.
Four players took different parts of the job
Kroupi moved into the No 10 role behind Evanilson.
Tavernier, who had been operating centrally, moved towards the left and regularly came inside. That movement opened the outside channel for Truffert, who became the natural width provider from full-back. Kroupi and Tavernier could also interchange, preventing the attacking structure from becoming fixed. Premier League
Rayan solved a different problem.
He did not replicate Semenyo’s role. Instead, he brought the high-speed carrying threat Bournemouth had lost.
At the Premier League’s May checkpoint, Rayan had five goals and two assists, reached a top speed of 34.92km/h and averaged 14.9 metres per carry. Semenyo’s recorded top speed had been 34.94km/h. Premier League
Truffert, meanwhile, completed the season with five assists and 142 crosses, giving Bournemouth a consistent source of external width when Tavernier moved inside. FBref
This is functional replacement rather than positional replacement.
Instead of finding another left-sided attacker with the same statistical profile, Bournemouth asked which jobs the attack would lose and then found several ways to recreate them.
Kroupi replaced goals—but perhaps more than was sustainable
Kroupi became the most obvious success story.
By the end of the season, he had scored 13 Premier League goals from 8.37 xG across 33 appearances. StatMuse
That is a 4.63-goal overperformance against expected goals.
Figure 2 gives the comparison.

It would be a mistake to call that simply lucky.
Finishing above xG can reflect skill, variance or some combination of both, and one season is not enough to separate those effects cleanly.
But it does place a limit on the succession argument.
Bournemouth should not assume 13 goals from the same underlying chance volume is automatically repeatable.
Kroupi also offered more than finishing. By the Premier League’s May checkpoint, he had won possession 19 times in the final third, equivalent to 1.11 such regains per 90 among the players included in the comparison. Premier League
So he helped replace some pressing and between-the-lines responsibility too.
Still, his hot finishing cannot explain why Bournemouth’s overall goals-per-match rate declined while their results improved so dramatically.
For that, we have to look without the ball.
Iraola changed the press
The most important tactical adjustment may also have been the least obvious.
Independent analysis of Bournemouth’s unbeaten run found that their defensive actions occurred approximately four metres closer to their own goal, while PPDA increased materially. The Transfer Flow
PPDA measures how many opposition passes a team allows before attempting a defensive action.
A higher number generally indicates a less aggressive press.
For a manager whose Bournemouth identity had been built around attacking opponents high up the pitch, that is significant.
Iraola did not abandon pressing.
He became more selective about where it happened. Which was a theme observed throughout the Premier League as pressing intensity changed in 2025/26.
The team defended deeper and allowed opponents slightly more room before engaging. The Transfer Flow
That change coincided with the enormous fall in goals conceded.
It cannot prove causation on its own.
Several things changed at once: Rayan arrived, Kroupi’s responsibility increased, Tavernier moved, Truffert’s role became clearer and the pressing height changed. Premier League The Transfer Flow
But the defensive shift is too large to treat as background noise.
Why pressing less could make this Bournemouth harder to beat
Aggressive pressing carries an unavoidable trade-off.
The higher a team commits players to hunting the ball, the more space it risks leaving behind them if that first pressure is beaten.
A slightly deeper starting point can reduce those open spaces.
Bournemouth’s defenders and midfielders may therefore have had less ground to protect after the press was bypassed.
That is a tactical interpretation rather than something the available data proves directly.
But it fits the observed change.
A deeper block could also affect the attack in another way.
Recovering the ball closer to your own goal can leave more space in front of the attackers when the opposition have moved forward. For players such as Rayan, whose carrying speed was one of his standout attributes, that could create useful transition opportunities.
Again, that mechanism remains a hypothesis.
What is established is that Bournemouth pressed less aggressively during the unbeaten sequence and conceded dramatically fewer goals. The Transfer Flow StatMuse
Unbeaten does not mean dominant
There is another reason not to overstate Bournemouth’s transformation.
The 17 matches after Semenyo’s farewell contained ten draws alongside seven victories. StatMuse
They became extraordinarily difficult to defeat.
That is different from becoming dominant.
The distinction matters because an unbeaten run can make improvement look more comprehensive than it really was.
Bournemouth’s attacking numbers suggest evolution rather than explosion.
Shot volume barely changed.
xG improved modestly.
Goals actually declined.
The transformation was primarily in how effectively those attacking numbers translated into results because the defensive requirement became much smaller. StatMuse StatMuse
That may be the more sustainable lesson.
The best replacement for a star might not be another star
Semenyo’s departure could easily have pushed Bournemouth towards the most obvious response.
Find another powerful winger.
Ask him to carry.
Ask him to score.
Ask him to transition.
Ask him to become the new version of the player who left.
Instead, Bournemouth changed the question.
Kroupi took central finishing and pressing responsibility.
Rayan restored speed and carrying.
Tavernier shifted left and moved inside.
Truffert supplied the width outside him.
And behind all of them, Iraola changed where Bournemouth defended.
The result was not a better version of the old attack.
It was a different team.
That is why Bournemouth’s 2025/26 finish offers a broader recruitment lesson.
When an important player leaves, the lost value does not necessarily need to return in one shirt.
Sometimes the better solution is to identify every function that player performed, redistribute them across the squad and then ask whether the structure around those players should change too.
Bournemouth lost their focal point.
They responded by becoming less dependent on having one.
