After the first 8 matches of the English Premier League, there have been over 1889 recorded shots and 200 goals scored. But are there minutes of play that are more prominent for shots to be taken and goals to be scored?
In this article, we look at data from the first 8 matches in the 25-26 Premier League season to answer the question, what is the most dangerous minute in the Premier League?
The 37th Minute: Where Premier League Defenses Fall Apart
After the first eight matches of the 25-26 English Premier League season, the most dangerous minute is the 37th. In the 37th minute there have been 9 goals scored, the most goals scored in any single minute so far this season.
As seen in the graph below, the 37th minute far outweighs other times in the match for most goals scored in single minute after 8 matches played.
What Makes the 37th Minute So Lethal?
Well, that’s a good question. The exact reason might be hard to pinpoint but we can look at some general observations in an attempt to answer it.
At 37 minutes into a match, about 82% of the first half regular time has been played. At this point in the match, defensively teams can start to become complacent.
They know half time is approaching fast and they might begin to let their guard down, thinking they’ve already defended well in the first half.
From an offensive perspective, teams might be pushing to make a mark on the game before half time. If a team scores a goal late in the first half, it can be a real mood changer in the dressing room at half, giving the scoring team the mentality that they can kick on and win the game.
As seen in the graph above, the second most dangerous minute in terms of goals scored is late in the second half in the 84th minute. There have been 8 goals scored so far in the 84th minute in the 25-26 Premier League season.
Despite Erling Haaland leading the scoring with 11 Premier League goals so far, surprisingly enough, he is yet to score in either the 37th or 84th minute.
We’ll see if that changes over the course of the season. Interesting enough though, he has scored twice in two separate minutes of play. Haaland has scored twice in the 9th minute and twice in the 34th minute of play.
On the whole, there are notably more goals scored in the second half of play. On a percentage basis, 59% of the 200 goals scored so far this season have been in the second half. That equates to 118 goals in the second half.
Meaning, only 82 goals (41%) have been scored so far in the first half.
So, if you’ve only got time to watch one half, chances are your better watching the second half of play if you’re wanting to see some goals. Which is an interesting point, considering the most goals in a single minute of play has so far, come in the first half.
Why Do So Many Goals Come Late in Matches?
Now we know the most dangerous minute of play in regards to goals scored so far in the 25-26 Premier League season, what about the minute of play with the most shots taken?
And while it might make sense for those minutes with the most goals scored to also have the most shots, more shots generally equal more goals, that is not the case.
There are two minutes of play that are tied for the highest number of shots, both in the second half. The 58th minute and the 90+3 minute, both have had 33 shots across all Premier League matches so far in the 25-26 season.
There have been 5 goals scored in each of the 58th and 90+3 minute of play. To put it in perspective, there were only 24 shots taken to produce the 9 goals scored in the 37th minute.
The Late Surge: Why Shots Peak in the 58th and 90+3rd Minutes
Similar to the goal analysis above, there could be several reasons the number of shots spikes in these minutes of play. For starters, the 58th minute is right around the hour mark and when substitutions are often made. Players typically know and expect this.
The cluster of shots around the 58th minute could potentially either be from players who know they are likely to be subbed soon, putting in a bit of extra effort and trying to make one last mark on the game.
Alternatively, players that are brought into the game are often eager to quickly get on the ball and make an impact while their legs are still fresh. In this case, it could be players that have been subbed into the game, looking to make an impact.
As for the cluster of shots in the 90+3 minute of play (matches today are almost certain to have a least 3 minutes of stoppage time in the second half), it is very late in the game but early in stoppage time, when clubs are seeking to score a final late goal.
This deciding goal might be either an attempt to tie the match or to win the match. Regardless of the match, squads are always pushing to get that late goal, hence the heavy increase of shots at this stage of the game.
The 58th minute and the 90+3 minute, both have had 33 shots across all Premier League matches so far in the 25-26 season.
As the graph shows, shots begin to fizzle out quickly as the duration of second half stoppage time increases, as not many matches go past 8 or so minutes of stoppage time.
Additionally, as seen in the graph above, the second highest shots in a single minute is just after the mid-point of the first half in the 26th minute. There have been 29 shots so far in the 25-26 Premier League season (after 8 matches) in the 26th minute.
Final Thoughts: The Most Dangerous Minute in the Premier League
Well, that’s it for this article. In this post, we take a look at the most dangerous minute in the Premier League after the first 8 matches in the 25-26 season.
That minute is the 37th minute, in which 9 Premier League goals have been scored; the most in a single minute so far this season. No player has scored twice yet in the 37th minute.
The 9 players that have scored in the 37th include Ekitike, Reijnders, Sarr, Mateta, Casemiro, Rodon, Watkins, Munoz, and Rogers.
The second most dangerous minute in terms of goals scored is the 84th minute, in which 8 goals have been scored so far this season.
As for shots, 33 shots have been taken in both the 58th minute and the 90+3 minute. That’s the most shots in a single minute of play after 8 matches in the 25-26 Premier League season. In second is the 26th minute, in which 29 shots have been taken.
Interestingly enough, Harry Wilson, Jaidon Anthony, and João Pedro have each taken 2 shots in the 58th minute (no goals scored).
