Brighton finished the 2025/26 Premier League season with 52 goals.

Their chances suggested they might have scored closer to 58.

A six-goal gap does not sound enormous across 38 matches. But Brighton’s shortfall becomes much more interesting once you look at who was actually doing the finishing. Their main striker was not dragging the attack down. Danny Welbeck scored 13 league goals and slightly exceeded his expected-goal total.

The missing goals were somewhere else.

Brighton’s season therefore raises a more useful question than whether they were simply wasteful. They created enough chances to produce more attacking output, but were those chances consistently falling to the players best equipped to finish them?

That turns a finishing problem into a tactical one.

Six missing goals — but whose?

Brighton underperformed their expected goals by 5.90 goals, the fourth-largest negative gap in the Premier League, according to the Premier League’s summer squad analysis. FotMob independently recorded them at 52 goals from 57.9 xG. Premier League FotMob

Figure 1 shows the basic problem.

Expected goals, or xG, estimates the likelihood that shots become goals based on the characteristics of those attempts. It is not a measure of what a team “deserved” to score, and different providers can produce slightly different totals.

What it can do is give us a useful baseline.

Brighton’s 57.9 xG suggests their attack generated a respectable quantity and quality of chances across the season. The issue was converting enough of those opportunities into actual goals. FotMob

That distinction matters because it rules out the simplest explanation.

Brighton were not a team that completely failed to create.

They recorded 494 league shots and 176 on target in the StatMuse dataset. StatMuse

There was attacking volume.

There were opportunities.

The next question is who received them.

Welbeck was not the problem

When a team’s goals fall below its expected-goal total, attention naturally turns towards the centre-forward.

That would be the wrong place to begin with Brighton.

Opta’s model tells the same broader story from a slightly different measurement base: Welbeck scored 12 non-penalty goals from 10.1 non-penalty xG. Opta Analyst

The important point is not the small difference between providers. The models should not be mixed into one calculation.

The important point is that neither supports the idea of an underperforming striker.

Welbeck converted at least as well as the quality of his opportunities suggested.

That matters tactically because Welbeck operated as Brighton’s clearest reference point in true No 9 areas. He gave the attack a player whose role naturally placed him in finishing positions close to goal.

And he delivered in a late-career scoring run.

That is where the team’s finishing deficit starts to look less like one striker having a bad season and more like a problem spread through the supporting cast.

The shortfall accumulated around him

Figure 2 makes that distribution easier to see.

Using StatMuse consistently for all five players avoids the problem of combining different expected-goal models.

Welbeck scored 13 from 12.47 xG, a difference of +0.53.

Georginio Rutter also finished slightly above expectation, scoring three from 2.62 xG.

The other selected supporting attackers were below.

None of those individual gaps is dramatic.

Together, they begin to explain the team-level shortfall.

This is important because finishing problems are often discussed as if they must belong to one obvious player. Brighton’s numbers suggest something more diffuse. Their centre-forward converted. Several surrounding attackers did not quite match the value of the chances they received.

That could simply be variance.

But it also raises the more interesting possibility that the identity of the chance recipient matters just as much as the chance itself.

Creating a chance is only half the attacking design

Two teams can create the same expected-goal total without constructing their attacks in the same way.

One might funnel chances towards a specialist striker.

Another might distribute them between wingers, attacking midfielders, runners from deeper positions and rotating forwards.

The totals can look similar.

The consequences may not.

Brighton’s attacking structure offered flexibility. Their tactical setup included wide combinations, attacking midfielders moving between positions and, at times, false-nine movements rather than a permanent focal point. That can create obvious advantages.

Rotations make marking harder. A forward dropping away from the defensive line can pull centre-backs into uncomfortable areas. Wide attackers can move inside while another player occupies the space they leave.

But fluidity introduces another question:

Who arrives when the move reaches its final action?

That is where chance ownership becomes important.

If the best chances repeatedly fall to players whose main strengths lie in ball progression, combination play or movement rather than finishing, a team can produce respectable xG without converting enough of it.

That is a hypothesis, not something the public data can prove.

We do not have sufficiently detailed event-chain analysis here to say that particular Brighton chance types caused the six-goal deficit.

But the distribution of finishing provides a reason to investigate the structure rather than blaming Welbeck.

What happens without a focal point?

Brighton’s opening match offered an early illustration of the underlying tactical question.

A false nine can create valuable movement.

Instead of remaining between the centre-backs, the forward drops towards midfield. A defender then has a decision: follow him and potentially leave space behind, or hold position and allow the forward to receive between the lines.

Either choice can help the attacking team.

But removing a conventional striker from the highest line can also change who eventually reaches the penalty area.

That trade-off matters for Brighton because Welbeck’s season provides evidence that their most recognisable centre-forward could still finish effectively when opportunities reached him.

The challenge was not necessarily finding someone better to convert Welbeck’s chances.

It may have been finding ways to increase the number of attacks that ended with dependable finishers receiving the decisive opportunity.

That is a different recruitment and tactical problem.

Brighton’s xG does not prove the system worked perfectly

There is an obvious temptation here.

If Brighton created roughly 58 xG, perhaps the answer is simply to change nothing and wait for finishing to regress towards expectation.

There is some logic to that.

A six-goal deficit across one season is not proof of a permanent weakness. Finishing moves around. Players can undershoot expected goals one year and exceed them the next.

Expected-goal models also differ, which is why provider totals should be handled carefully.

Injuries can alter roles and combinations. A few unusual misses can move a team’s season-long differential. One campaign is a limited sample from which to identify a permanent structural flaw. Finishing can move substantially above or below expectation.

Brighton may simply have suffered an ordinary year of poor conversion around an otherwise functional attack.

That explanation cannot be dismissed.

But nor should xG become a blanket defence of the system.

Generating 57.9 xG says something about the quality of shots Brighton created in aggregate. It does not establish that those chances were distributed optimally between players, nor that every attacking role was functioning as intended.

Chance quality and chance ownership are related questions, not identical ones.

The summer question is bigger than another striker

That distinction changes how Brighton’s season should be interpreted.

The easy conclusion would be that a side scoring six fewer goals than expected needs a more clinical centre-forward.

Welbeck’s numbers argue against that diagnosis.

He scored 13 league goals. He slightly exceeded his StatMuse xG and also surpassed his non-penalty expectation in Opta’s model. StatMuse Opta Analyst

Brighton’s larger problem was that nobody else came particularly close to matching his scoring contribution. Their second-highest league scorer finished with five. Premier League

That does not necessarily mean Brighton need another traditional striker.

It means their attacking design should be judged partly by who it places on the end of moves.

If the system continues to spread shots among flexible supporting attackers, then the finishing quality of those players becomes especially important.

If Brighton instead concentrate more high-value opportunities around a focal point, the shape of the attack may change.

Either route involves trade-offs.

And without more detailed event data, we cannot say which one would be superior.

The missing goals may tell us where to look next

Welbeck’s departure to Chelsea changes the context of Brighton’s finishing problem entirely.

During 2025/26, Brighton’s attack did not fail because their centre-forward was wasteful. Welbeck slightly outperformed his expected goals and finished as the club’s leading scorer. The wider attack was where much of the six-goal shortfall accumulated.

That means Brighton are not simply replacing 13 league goals this summer. They are replacing the one attacker who consistently converted the opportunities his role provided.

The challenge now is larger than recruiting another striker. Brighton must decide whether to recreate the same attacking structure with a new focal point or redesign the attack so that more of its highest-quality chances fall to players capable of replacing Welbeck’s output.

Until that question is answered, last season’s six missing goals remain more than a statistical curiosity. They become one of the defining tactical questions of Brighton’s new era.
